Metal Building Insulation

Metal Building Insulation

Attic Man offers both open cell and closed cell spray foam for metal buildings. Whether you have a steel building, a garage, or a metal shed, spray foam insulation will offer the best performance.

Why Spray Foam a Metal Building?

Many metal buildings come with vinyl. While vinyl may offer protection initially, it will eventually dry, crack, and fall. Vinyl is not a permanent solution for your building, nor an insulation option.

While you could use batt insulation in the walls of a steel structure, you’ll sacrifice performance. Fiberglass batt only combats one of three forms of heat transfer. If you plan to spend lots of time in your metal building, you’ll want a high performance insulation to keep the space comfortable.

Spray foam insulation will last a lifetime. As a plastic foam, the insulation isn’t going anywhere. Spray foam also offers a high R-value and an airtight seal, which helps to address all three forms of heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation).

Using Open Cell Spray Foam

Open cell spray foam is the more affordable option. Compared to closed cell, open cell is about half the cost. With an R-value of approximately R-3.5 per inch, open cell spray foam needs more depth. Ideally, we would install 5 inches of open cell on a roof deck, bringing the overall R-value to about R-20. However, there are lots of thickness options depending on your goals.

While open cell is less expensive, it doesn’t offer a moisture barrier. You may not need a moisture barrier for your use of the metal building. Talk to the pros at Attic Man to determine if open cell spray foam is right for your project!

Using Closed Cell Spray Foam

Closed cell spray foam is a more expensive option. Closed cell is about twice the cost of open cell spray foam. However, closed cell spray foam also offers a higher R-value per inch, a moisture barrier, and increased rigidity.

With an R-value per inch of approximately R-6.7, closed cell needs less product installed to achieve a high R-value. Attic Man installs 2 inches of closed cell spray foam on average in metal buildings. You can discuss your insulation thickness options with the Attic Man team!
